Capilano IDEA School of Design - Strathcona walking tour
Can’t visit this neighbourhood without visiting La Casa Gelato!
This week, I had the pleasure of leading a walking tour alongside the fantastic Elyssa Schmid for the design students from the IDEA School of Design at Capilano University. Their latest project focuses on finding ways to promote our vibrant neighbourhood, Strathcona, and I was thrilled to contribute to their project.
We started the tour by exploring different corners of Strathcona, highlighting its rich history, diverse community, and unique character. From historic buildings to community gardens and the harsh reality of the drug epidemic in our city, we discussed how these elements tell the story of the neighbourhood and offer endless inspiration for creative storytelling.
After the walking tour, we gathered in our studio for a talk about how Creative Others approaches projects like this. I shared insights into our process, from understanding a community's identity to creating authentic and impactful campaigns. We talked about the importance of collaboration, listening to the voices of local residents, and using design as a tool to celebrate and elevate the essence of a place.
It was inspiring to see the students’ enthusiasm and unique perspectives. I can’t wait to see how they bring their ideas to life and contribute to showcasing Strathcona as the incredible neighbourhood it is.
To the IDEA School of Design students: thank you for your curiosity and energy. Strathcona is lucky to have your creative minds on board and don't forget to get those Linkedin profiles looking ship shape and connect, connect, connect!!!
Shout out to Mesh Devkota and Alexis Chiang for the action shots!
