A sail motif anchors the design, symbolizing the club’s connection to the sea. Each piece is crafted to be a lasting memento of achievement and pride.
BRIEF
For the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, we designed and fabricated a collection of custom trophies, plaques, and medals to celebrate the club’s members, their achievements, and their shared passion for sailing. Our goal was to create awards that felt meaningful and personal while honoring the club’s long history and strong sense of community.
Each piece combines locally sourced BC wood with clear acrylic, balancing natural warmth with a modern, refined look. The process involved testing different wood types, engraving depths, and layering techniques to achieve the right proportions, and finish.
The awards were presented by the Lewin La France sisters, two accomplished Olympic sailors whose presence added a special connection between the trophies and the sport they represent. Furthermore, each piece serves as a lasting keepsakean enduring reminder of dedication, craftsmanship, and the legacy of the club.
Considerations
Material Choices: Combine BC wood with transparent acrylic for a modern look that reflects the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club’s coastal heritage and balance between tradition and innovation. Each material was carefully selected for its texture, and quality.
Design Cohesion: Use angular lines and layered materials inspired by the club’s insignia and sailing forms, with subtle engravings to reinforce its identity and precision. This consistent visual language ties each piece together, creating a unified and recognizable collection.
Sailing Motif: Include a minimalist sail-inspired centerpiece that unifies the trophies and medals under a shared nautical theme. The motif embodies the club’s ongoing connection to the sea and its celebration of sailing as both art and sport.
Durability and Finish: Apply precise laser etching and tested finishes to ensure lasting quality. The polished acrylic and matte wood surfaces provide durability and a clean, timeless appearance, allowing each award to remain elegant and intact for years to come.
