Project Overview

Client: Metro Vancouver

Location: Vancouver, BC, Canada

Duration: 2024

Scope: A portable, CNC-crafted topographical map showcasing Metro Vancouver's water infrastructure, designed for interactive public engagement at events.

BRIEF

The Topographical Water Map is a detailed, analog representation of the region’s water infrastructure, providing an engaging way for visitors to explore and understand local water systems. Built using 3D modeling and CNC machining, the map is highly accurate, with an overhead projector enhancing the water features to ensure precision. Designed for event use, the map encourages visitors to locate landmarks like their homes or nearby infrastructure, making it a popular attraction. The structure is robust and portable, with a base that doubles as a protective lid and detachable legs for transport.

Considerations

  • CNC machining for precise topographical accuracy, with particular focus on water features.

  • Adding an overhead projector to maintain water feature clarity for educational purposes.

  • Creating a modular and portable structure, including a lid for protection and a custom dolly for easy transportation.

  • Ensuring durability for repeated public use over a minimum three-year lifespan.

  • Incorporating design elements that encourage interactive exploration, enhancing visitor engagement.

Concept designs & 3d Models

Our 3D modeling process combines precision and creativity, allowing us to bring complex concepts to life in a visually compelling way. Starting with detailed client insights and sketches, our team crafts each element of the activation in a digital 3D space, refining the design to ensure structural integrity and visual impact. This process enables us to preview and perfect every detail before production, ensuring the final activation captures both the intended functionality and aesthetic. The result is a meticulously designed model that serves as a blueprint for fabrication, aligning seamlessly with the project’s vision and enhancing the viewer's immersive experience.
